Puerto Rican modeling powerhouse Joan Smalls has broken new ground for models of color. 2010 was a spectacular year for Smalls, as her switch from Elite to IMG helped set her up for a hectic 40 shows in the spring season alone, followed by a double-shot of stardom when both Givenchy and Gucci sought her out to front ad campaigns. Multiple Vogue editorials, including one shot by the legendary Mario Testino, helped situate Smalls as one of the industry’s most promising rising talents. The fact that she’s drop-dead gorgeous only makes her rise to prominence that much more fun for us to enjoy. She’ll be featured next by Tom Ford in his 2011 spring show.
