Eric Dier's head has been turned by interest from Manchester United

The England and Tottenham midfielder has learned that United bosses are interested in luring him to Old Trafford.

And Dier has told close friends he's excited about the possibility of working under Jose Mourinho.

It is believed United boss Mourinho has turned his attentions to Dier after missing out on Nemanja Matic.

United were confident of signing Matic and held extensive talks with Chelsea about clinching a £40m deal.

But all that changed once United blindsided the champions over Romelu Lukaku and pinched him from right under their noses.

United signed the Belgium ace in a deal totalling £100m to leave Stamford Bridge bosses seething.

It has resulted in the Blues blocking Matic's move to United and left Mourinho's men having to look elsewhere.

But Starsport understands senior figures at United, including executive vice chairman Ed Woodward, shave admired Dier for quite a while.

United believed it would be difficult to prise Dier from White Hart Lane, where Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is determined to hold onto his brightest stars.

It is understood Spurs value Dier in the £60m bracket, which is about £20m more than what United believe he's worth.

But United still believe a compromise can be reached and know Levy might be willing to accept a bid in the region of £50m.

Dier, 23, has won 19 England caps and established himself as one of the best holding midfielders in the top flight.

Mourinho needs someone in this role who can become a long-term successor to Michael Carrick and believes Dier fits the bill.

He earns £70,000-a-week at White Hart Lane and knows he could double his wages with a move to United.

Dier lost his status as an automatic choice of Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino last season.

He faced strong competition from Victor Wanyama, who joined Spurs last summer from Southampton.

Dier was often used in central defence, but his preferred position is defensive midfield and this has caused him to consider his future at Spurs.

Now Dier is hoping Spurs bosses don't price him out of a move to Manchester as negotiations between the two clubs begin.

Woodward has remained in Manchester instead of joining United on their pre-season tour of America and is believed to be keen to thrash out a deal for jetting Stateside.
