Nemanja Matic was one of Jose Mourinho's top targets at Manchester United
MANCHESTER UNITED have pulled out of a £40 million deal to sign Serbian midfielder Nemanja Matic from Chelsea - and instead are planning a move for Tottenham’s Eric Dier.
With the Old Trafford club closing in on a £75 million move for Everton’s Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku - a player Chelsea have been chasing all summer, plans for Matic have been dropped, with relations between the two clubs not likely now to be warm.
Instead, United will look to a move for Tottenham’s England midfielder Eric Dier.
But they have been quoted a £50 million asking price for the former Sporting Lisbon player.
Chelsea are now left with two players they do not want, in Matic and Diego Costa.
Antonio Conte is understood to be fuming that his club allowed Lukaku to be stolen away.
The player had for a long time given every indication that Stamford Bridge was the only place he wanted to go
A £35 million deal for Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko is close to being completed - but could be held up by the failure of the Matic deal.
And a £34m deal for Roma defender Antonio Rudiger is also close.
