Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney hasn't asked to leave the club
Speculation is mounting that the England and Man United captain will join the Chinese Super League before their transfer window closes at the end of this month.
Jose Mourinho added fuel to the fire when he admitted he didn't know if Rooney would still be at the club next week.
But Starsport can reveal Rooney and his representatives were surprised with Mourinho's comments and had no warning the United boss was going to add to the speculation.
His comments ahead of tonight's Europa League clash in St Etienne have been viewed as 'unhelpful'.
Starsport has been told no deal with a Chinese club is in place and that the striker, 31, remains committed to United.
He is keen to get back into the team and help the club win some trophies before making a decision on his future.
Wayne Rooney and his team were surprised by Jose Mourinho's comments yesterday
It is understood he will be in the squad for Sunday's EFL Cup final against Southampton if fit enough and will start the game on the bench.
Rooney still has 16 months remaining on his £300,000-a-week deal and is reluctant to leave the club.
He is also reluctant to move to China and knows if he was offered a deal too good to turn down he would be forced to leave wife Coleen and three young children at home.
Starsport understands just two Chinese teams, Jiangsu Suning and Beijing Guoan have spaces in their squads for a foreign signing.
The two Shanghai based clubs, Shenhua and SIPG, are not interested in signing Rooney despite speculation claiming the opposite.
Rooney's representatives have held talks with several interested parties, with Beijing his most likely destination if he does decide to go to China.

But he also has interest from several Major League Soccer clubs and America would be his preferred destination if he leaves United.
But England and United's record goalscorer will not push for a move and will only leave if executive vice chairman Ed Woodward tells him he's no longer wanted.
