Ronaldo Nazario de Lima is to open three football schools in China next month as part of a long-term plan to aid the development of budding young players.
In September the former striker announced that he intends to set up 30 schools across China in the coming years. The first three will be located in Beijing, Shanghai and Mianyang (in the Sichuan province, in the south-west of the country) and will be up and running in December, as confirmed by Paulo Swerts, who will manage the schools.
Ronaldo's venture, for which he is teaming up with multimillionaire Brazilian investor Carlos Wizard Martins, ties in with similarly ambitious plans launched by the Chinese government, which wants to promote grassroots football by teaching the game at primary and secondary schools.
The government's aim is to make the Chinese men's team a global power, with a view to potentially hosting the World Cup one day, and to return the women's side to the elite (the Steel Roses were runners-up at the 1999 World Cup in the USA).
