England win 2nd ODI at Lord's

  • England's Joe Root and Pakistan captain Azhar Ali spoke after England's victory by four wickets in the 2nd ODI at Lord's on Saturday (27th August). England now have a 2-0 lead in the five game series.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Joe Root, England batsman(on England's improvement since the 2015 World Cup):

"Yeah I think it's pretty obvious that the mind-set has shifted slightly since that World Cup. I still think there's a lot of work for us to do if we want to be the best team in the world but we are going about it the right way. And hopefully in a few years time or a bit sooner we will be right up there."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Joe Root, England batsman (on England's good start in the second ODI):

"Yes of course it is - when you get the start that we did it's always going to be hard for Pakistan to get back into the game. Fair play to Sarfraz - he played brilliantly but I thought throughout the way we stuck at it was excellent and to restrict them to 250 we always knew that if we got a couple of significant partnerships we would be able to cross the line."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Joe Root, England batsman (on his own good form):

"Yeah it's been, I've had a good time over the last couple of games but you know how quickly it can change so you've got to be really ruthless in your practice and make sure that you are absolutely ready come the next one. I thought at the end there it was quite challenging with the reverse swing it was good the way we approached that whole innings and didn't leave it too late in case that factored into it. But I think more than anything keep doing what I'm doing in practice and make sure I'm absolutely ready come the next game."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Joe Root, England batsman (on the clash with Adil Rashid in the field):

"I could see him yeah, in the corner of my eye. I'm pretty sure I put my arms out and said that it's my catch and shouted but he mustn't have heard me. He hit me pretty hard actually - I'm surprised that such a little guy could make such a strong tackle. Yeah, no dramas or serious injury .... Yeah we were very lucky actually - we were not far away from 'Rash' head butting my knee. We did get very lucky in that respect yes."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Azhar Ali, Pakistan captain (on Pakistan's poor start):

"I think, specially if you start with the batting, the start was not good at all. I think three early wickets was really difficult to come back from that. The good thing was the way Sarfraz and Baba batted after that. I think they fought back".

SOUNDBITE: (English) Azhar Ali, Pakistan captain (on Pakistan's poor start):

"If I think if you have a 10:30am start your openers have to take responsibility to get through the first 10 overs, but unfortunately the top order couldn't really do anything. They got out on good balls, but still as a professional cricketer we should be able to cope with that and find a way".

SOUNDBITE: (English) Azhar Ali, Pakistan captain (on Pakistan's poor start):

"I think Hasan Ali came in today and bowled well - that's a good positive sign. And obviously Sami (Sami Islam) as you've seen he has done well in the test matches and is very much capable of scoring runs in the ODIs as well. So I'm very comfortable with that and hopefully in the next few games they will perform well and win games for us."
