Pakistan coach Mickey Arthur criticised the performances of his own players in one-day cricket ahead of Saturday's second ODI against England at Lord's.
SOUNDBITE: (English) Mickey Arthur, Pakistan coach:
(on the defeat to England in the first ODI on Wednesday)
"Yeah, there were certainly some areas we weren't happy with. That was my first ODI with Pakistan and sort of everything I've heard sort of was on view really. We've had a real good chat about it this morning and got some ideas as to how we can put it right. At the moment I've said to the boys we've got absolutely nothing to lose. I want to see the guys go out and really express themselves and play with a little bit of freedom because playing the way we did the other night, we're behind the times. We've had a good chat as I said, about it and hopefully we'll start putting it into operation and get more confidence with the style we want to play."
(Q: Can you use England as a template for what they've done over the past year?)
"England and all other teams around the world are sort of playing the same way. But we can't use anybody as a template. We've got to take our assets and try and make them the best we possible can. We know what we've got in terms of players and we've just got to put some plans in place that we can really challenge England and challenge other teams around the world. Using our assets and our best players in each area."
SOUNDBITE: (English) Mickey Arthur, Pakistan coach:
"I think it will take a little bit of time because the players have to get confident with it. The players have got to buy into it you know. As I've said to you, we've got nothing to lose. We're going to ... we're not going to stop. We're going to build a team that we think can compete in a year or two's time. And the invitation is there to every player. Step up or we'll find someone else that can step up. It's as simple as that. And we want to play with a style that's going to be fairly attractive and not leaves us behind the rest of the world."
SOUNDBITE: (English) Mickey Arthur, Pakistan coach:
(asked if is contemplating big changes in the ODI squad)
"Yeah for sure. I said to the players this morning, nobody's safe. And if you're over 30, I'm afraid you've got to be coming to the table more often than not otherwise it gives us opportunities to blood some younger players. As I said and again, I'm telling no secrets nobody is 100 per cent safe in this one-day side and the guys know that. They've been told that. They need to step up. Whether we'll be as drastic as that tomorrow, possibly not. But everybody knows they're on notice."
