-
Cal Crutchlow won the Czech Grand Prix on Sunday (21st August) for his maiden MotoGP triumph.
Crutchlow also become the first British rider for 35 years to claim a race in the premium category.
A wet, treacherous Automotodrom circuit in Brno.
A day for caution.
But one man was prepared to gamble.
While most of the MotoGP riders opted for soft wets, Cal Crutchlow chose a harder compound.
And after starting tenth on the grid, he soon embarked on scything his way through the field as the track slowly dried out.
Crutchlow swept into the lead with seven of the 22 laps remaining - and stayed there.
The 30-year-old went onto record a maiden MotoGP success in a time of 47 minutes 44.290 seconds.
Valentino Rossi too, was prepared to disavow orthodoxy - at least partly - choosing a hard Michelin rear tyre.
The Italian finished 7.2 seconds back - championship leader Marc Marquez battled to third.
A fabulous day, then, for Crutchlow and the LCR Honda team, and a first British success in motorcycling's premier class since Barry Sheene in 1981.
SOUNDBITE (English): Cal Crutchlow
"I expected probably a different feeling. But with Lucy giving birth the other week, that was the best feeling in the world. Don't get me wrong, winning races is fantastic. But I had the best present a couple of weeks ago, as we know [...] I am really, really pleased for my team. I smashed a bike yesterday (Saturday) and honestly, they did not leave the circuit until midnight last night. That was a good way to repay them today."
