The Brownlee brothers, Alistair and Jonathan, said it was "massively special" to finish first and second in the men's triathlon at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio on Thursday (18th August).

"Obviously it's a massive achievement and I'm massively proud of myself and really, really happy. But I don't do it for the history side of it or to think 'this hasn't been done before'. I train day in and day out because you are focusing on the process of doing it and pushing yourself and genuinely have a love of pushing myself in training and knowing I couldn't have done any more today, that was a good day's training. They all build up and you end up on the starting line in the best possible shape and you've just got to go out and execute your race. I think the whole history side of it and significance will sink in over the next few weeks."

"That's very, very special. I've only been to two Olympics and in London I got a bronze and then a silver here so I'm going in the right direction. You never know in four years time it depends on how Alistair is and if he continues, but I'm very, very proud. You want to get beaten by the best athletes and Alistair is definitely the best athletes in there today. I did everything I could over the last six months to be here in the best possible shape. Had the best race I could and executed the best race I could and I'm very, very happy."

"It's massively special. I think, you know, obviously we've been trying to do it. We tried to do it in London, nearly got there and then pulled it off today. It's much more than just the result. It's a signal to all the training we do together day in, day out. Whether it's a freezing cold night in Yorkshire or we are out in the (Yorkshire) Dales and it's raining. We push each other on day in, day out and more than anything we appreciate how important we are to each other and how important the fact that we can push each other on is. To get there and be able to do that on the biggest stage today together is just so special."

(On how they will celebrate their medals)

"Well, we are definitely going to celebrate it. We've lived like a monk for a long time. We've been up in the mountains in San Moritz in Switzerland, we've been on an air force base in Brazil to train. So we're definitely going to celebrate it. First thing we're going to do is have some food, I'm very hungry, and then we'll go and celebrate it. And over the next few days we'll watch a lot of sport, I'm a massive sports fan."
