Despite issues with at least three of the current batting line-up, England cricket coach Trevor Bayliss said on Sunday (14th August) that "there doesn't seem to be anyone that's sort of crying out to be selected above anyone else."
SOUNDBITE (English): Trevor Bayliss, England coach (Do you believe that there is a dearth of batting talent in England cricket at the moment?):
"Yeah, there doesn't seem to be anyone that's sort of crying out to be selected above anyone else. There's a number of guys that we've seen score some runs earlier this season. (When) under a bit of scrutiny, when their names are mentioned for a possibility of getting into the team, some of them have dropped off. I think (England captain) Alastair Cook just said that (we had) two or three guys that got in the team have been very good players over the past two or three years, experienced players at county level, and they've found it tough to jump up to this level. They've shown bits and pieces, but I think it just proves that the jump between first class cricket and test cricket is a big one. There's a month to go in the county season and it's a challenge out there for some of those other guys to put their hand up and keep scoring runs."
SOUNDBITE (English): Trevor Bayliss, England coach (In the final month of the English county season, will you be trying to see some of the England prospects?):
"Certainly if I can. There might be a chance in the next few days to go and watch one or two days and then you've got to be lucky enough that whoever you're going to watch is actually batting or bowling or that day as well. Certainly, I'll be trying to get there when I can, that's for sure."
