-
England trained at The Oval in London on Tuesday (9th August), two days before the fourth and final Test against Pakistan.
SOUNDBITE: (English) Alex Hales, England opening batsman:
(on the prospect of winning the series and the possibility of England becoming the number one ranked Test side in the world)
"Definitely, yeah. that's an incredible feeling, especially for a team that's still learning and developing, in my opinion. If we preform as well as we did in the last two Test matches, then you know, hopefully we can win this series. If we manage to get the number one spot, then that's incredibly exciting for us. As I've said, a team that's still learning and moving forward."
SOUNDBITE: (English) Alex Hales, England opening batsman:
(on how the England batsmen have played the Pakistan attack)
"Oh, I think we've done it well in the last two Test matches. Obviously, Lord's wasn't a great start for us, but one of the things we've identified is that they are a four-man attack, so the deeper we can take our batting, you know, if we can get their seamers into their third, fourth spells, and (Yasir) Shah bowling 30, 40 overs an innings, then we've got a good chance. Fatigue will set in for them, so the biggest thing for us is to try and bat as deep as we can in each innings and get the fatigue creeping in to those bowlers."
SOUNDBITE: (English) Alex Hales, England opening batsman:
(on England's 141-run win at Edgbaston and how it might have a psychological affect on the fourth Test at the Oval)
"Definitely, yeah. I think the 'stats' (statistics) were that with a 100 lead - sorry - a 100 run deficit, you only win 3 per cent of the time, so for us to bounce back the way we did, when we had our back to the wall, says a lot about our character. It could also defleate them, but as I've said, going into this Test match, we can't afford to get complacent. We have to show the same hunger and desire that we have done at Old Trafford (Manchester) and Edgbaston (Birmingham), here."
SOUNDBITE: (English) Alex Hales, England opening batsman:
(on England's middle order and how the runs they scored at Lord's making a real contribution)
"Definitely, yeah. the second innings was so important for us, you know, those guys you mentioned (James Vince, Gary Ballance and Moeen Ali) managed to, you know, put on match-winning scores in what was an important innings, probably in the whole of this series against Pakistan. Obviously, a few of us are disappointed not to have gone on and get bigger scores, but the scores that we did get contributed to a big win for English cricket, and that would have done our confidence a lot of good."
