Will Power used pit strategy to grab his third victory of the season and close in on Team Penske teammate Simon Pagenaud in the race for the IndyCar championship. The Aussie's victory Sunday (17 July) at the Honda Indy Toronto was his third in four races, and he was second last week at Iowa. He has closed the gap on Pagenaud to 47 points in the standings, and the two are tied for the most wins in IndyCar this season.SHOTLIST: Toronto, Ontario, Canada. 17th July, 2016.
IndyCar was in Canada on Sunday, running the Honda Indy Toronto.
Pole-sitter Scott Dixon led the field to the green as they began their 85-lap trek around the circuit.
Just moments after the start the first caution was called, as Ryan Hunter-Reay and Charlie Kimball came together in Turn 8.
On the sixth lap another yellow flag was called when Juan Pablo Montoya hit the back of defending race champion Josef Newgarden, who suffered damage to the rear of his car.
During the 58th lap American Newgarden crashed when he ran over the curb in Turn 5. It brought out a caution and ruined the race for Dixon, who had dominated up to that point. The Kiwi led 56 laps but couldn't recover from having to pit under yellow and finished eighth.
Tony Kanaan was in the lead at the restart, but he had to pit under green with 10 laps remaining and the lead went to Will Power.
A caution set up one final restart with one lap remaining.
When the race went green Power got a great start to pull away from Helio Castroneves and then beat his teammate to the chequered flag by 1.5275 seconds. Toronto native James Hinchcliffe finished third for his first career podium at his home race.
