Reaction from England captain Alastair Cook after his side were beaten by 75 runs by Pakistan in the first Test at Lord's on Sunday (17th July).

"I just think we had a few poor shot selections to certain types of balls and it was quite obvious to see. I think in general our batting in this match, we played some naive shots to certain angles, you could see what they were trying to do and we kind of fell into that trap, so it's frustrating, we go back and we've got to talk about it, but you can talk all you want, it's about delivering in the middle and no-one got a hundred in this game and you don't win many games when you don't score runs."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Alastair Cook, England captain:

Question: 'You've given players a lot of freedom to go and express themselves and when it doesn't work, do you take it as going with the rough and the smooth, or is it more complicated than that?'

"It's certainly not as simple as that. We're striving to become the best side we can be, but if... you know, as I've said, I think naive is the word. Because there were some certain shots which, you know, you don't mind getting bowled out sometimes and you can play bad shots, but we played too many bad shots to certain balls, I thought. I don't think we got our angles right, talking a bit technically, the angles to certain shots... So it is frustrating, we've got three days now to go away and work and it's never nice losing at Lord's and seeing the opposition like they were at the end, so we'll use that as motivation and get better."

"We've got the challenge ahead of ourselves now, and we've got to work really hard as a team, stay together, which we will do, and as I've said, we lost heavily to Australia here in a far worse performance and bounced back very quickly in the next two games, so it's not all gloom and doom, I think it was a good week in terms of some of the guys growing up, you know, in one sense becoming a match-hardened Test cricketer. Weeks like this do do that to you and we've got to improve as a side."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Alastair Cook, England captain: (on the potential returns of Jimmy Anderson and Ben Stokes for the second Test)

"Yeah, I mean it's great to see. I mean, I don't know quite what happened today (in their games), I think Stokesey got 20 or so, didn't he? I don't know how Jimmy bowled or whatever, but fingers crossed he came through ok and stuff, so that's great news for us, so yeah. I don't know if he got Stokesey out or what, so... (exchages light-hearted words with the journalists)... but it is nice that those two obviously seem to be back, pretty much to full fitness, but that's not, you know, you can't be using that as a reason that we lost. I'd hate that to come across. That's not why we did."
