People in Pretoria on Wednesday (6th July) gave their reaction to the six-year jail term for Oscar Pistorius.
SOUNDBITE (English) Manelisi Wolela, spokesperson for the Department of Correctional Services:
"As a principle the Department of Correctional Services does not give preferential treatment to offenders. We have different categories of offenders who are treated in a fairly common, fairly similar approach. But, what is important though is that it is important for us to understand every individual that is in our facilities. So that in the manner in which we are responding in correcting the offending behaviour, and incarcerating him or her, and also changing his outlook or her outlook on life. We are responsive to that individual."
SOUNDBITE (English) Chariene Potgieter, vox pop:
"I am so happy that it is such a short sentence. I believe his story, I believe that he is innocent, and I hope that everything will go well with him."
SOUNDBITE (English) Luleka Sonti, vox pop:
"For me it is good, but in my opinion I should (would) have given him 10 years sentence."
SOUNDBITE (English) Patience Msimango, vox pop:
"I understand he murdered someone, but I think due to humility, and maybe if he is sorry for what has done, I think it is better if he'd be forgiven."
SOUNDBITE (English) Murabha Muravha, vox pop:
"I should think that okay, it means that the law has taken its course."
SOUNDBITE (English) Joseph Hlungwane, vox pop:
"Our constitution is not working anymore, everyone will kill, you understand? Considering the fact the Pistorius killed, but they left him. So I mean like I think it is good for him to be in prison, I mean it's my views, you know."
