Oscar Pistorius arrived at the High Court in Pretoria for a sentencing hearing on Monday.
Defence witness psychologist Jonathan Scholtz testifies on the mental stage of Oscar Pistorius, on the first day of his sentencing hearing in Pretoria on Monday (13th June).
Double-amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorius arrived in court on Monday for the opening of his sentence hearing after he was convicted of murder by South Africa's Supreme Court of Appeal for shooting girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
It will be the second time Pistorius has been sentenced for the killing following an appeal by prosecutors.
Defence witness Jonathan Scholtz, a psychologist, testified on the mental health of Oscar Pistorius:
Scholtz stated that Pistorius has "clinically deteriorated"
UPSOUND: Psychologist Mr. Jonathan Scholtz on the stand says in English
"So what I saw now was an Oscar, I don't want to talk about a third Oscar but perhaps that would be accurate, that really has almost given up, his sprit seems broken I know that's a laid term but clinically he has deteriorated. One has to prompt him to get some sort of semblance of hope for the future, his functions have deteriorated, he forgets things he forgets that he has already told you things then he repeats them. I had to wake him up twice when I wanted to consult with him and he had either forgotten or was just too tired to get ready for the consultation. This departed from how he was in 2014. So as a clinical Psychologist at this time my feeling is that he is quite ill and has a severe condition. I would go so far as to say if he was my patient in private practice I would admit him to hospital and that's the Oscar we see now".
The sentencing hearing for the double-amputee is expected to last several days before Judge Thokozile Masipa announces the sentence later in the week.
The minimum sentence for murder in South Africa is 15 years in jail, but this can by reduced by a judge due to certain circumstances.
