England batsman Alex Hales says he is disappointed with his failure to reach his century after his partnership with Joe Root helped England reach310 for six in their first innings on the first day of the second Test at Chester-le-Street on Friday.
SOUNDBITE: (English) Alex Hales, England batsman:
"A combination of surprise, frustration and anger I think. Obviously, disappointed to get out again in the 80s, probably tried to hit it a little bit too hard and lost my shape a bit... but you live and learn and hopefully you look forward to the second innings."
SOUNDBITE: (English) Alex Hales, England batsman:
"Yeah, we had some pretty good partnerships. Myself and 'Rooty' (Joe Root) got a good partnership and then 'Vincey' (James Vince) and 'Rooty' as well and guysdown the order have contributed to... as I've said the first hour is going to be important tomorrow. If we can get through that unscathed we can go on and get what could be a really good score."
SOUNDBITE: (English) Alex Hales, England batsman:
"Yeah, I thing we probably just shaded it. So far, we've had guys who've had a couple of starts, maybe could have kicked on to bigger scores. I think the first hour or two tomorrow is going to be important. If we can get though that with minimal damage, we can hopefully push on to 450, which is a pretty good score on this pitch.!
SOUNDBITE: (English) Alex Hales, England batsman:
"Yeah, I think also not to get complacent with it, because it's only a couple of games ago that I was averaging 17 and there were questions over my spot, so at the same time, I fell I'm in good touch and feel I've learnt a lot from last winter, but it's still only a start and you know, there's a lot of stuff to prove and hopefully now those spots in all three formats."
