Jemima Sumgong picked herself after suffering a heavy fall to win the women's elite race at Sunday's (24th April) London Marathon. Eliud Kipchoge won the men's race in a course-record time.

The London marathon is always the most over-subscribed on the circuit and 2016 was no different - and this was the scene at the start line at 10am in Greenwich Park on Sunday morning (local time).

Just under two hours into the women's elite race - and a moment of drama.

Jemima Sumgong was tripped from behind - she fell, along with Mary Keitany and Aselefech Mergia.

The Kenyan picked herself up, her grazed head hurting, and fought back to the front.

Eventually it became a duel between herself and defending champion, Tigist Tufa.

Sumgong ran down Tufa, winning in a time of two hours, 22 minutes and 58 seconds.

The elite men's race also came down to two runners - and this time, a champion of 2015 did come out on top.

With 24 miles gone Kenyans Stanley Biwott and Eliud Kipchoge were shoulder to shoulder.

But a sudden burst on the Embankment took Kipchoge clear.

Kipchoge winning in two hours, three minutes and five seconds - just eight seconds off the world record.

It was the second fastest marathon in history and a course record for the former world champion.
