-
At a news conference in London on Wednesday (30th March), David Haye announced he will fight Arnold Gjergjaj in May.
SOUNDBITE: (English) David Haye, Former WBA heavyweight champion (on Arnold Gjergjaj):
"This time round we've chosen someone who's unbeaten in 29 fights, 21 knockouts so he's got some power. He's young, he's 31 years old so he's in the prime of his life. And he's someone who can move. He's got quick hands, he's got quick feet and he's coming to win. I need that, I need to test myself and prove myself. Plus, he's taller than me, it's really important to get someone who's a bit taller than myself to replicate what it my to like to fight one of the current champions. They're all a few inches taller than myself."
SOUNDBITE: (English) David Haye, Former WBA heavyweight champion (asked if boxing could be banned after Nick Blackwell's injuries):
"You can't ban boxing just like you can't ban rock climbing. You can't ban horse racing. People fall off and break their neck and fall off and die in horse racing a lot more than in boxing, same thing with rock climbing, same thing with most contact sports, rugby, NFL. Statistically boxing is relatively safe. It sounds crazy saying that now but if you look at it in general it's a safe sport. Occasionally you do get these anomalies, these situations where a fighter like Nick Blackwell is so tough, any other normal person would have been knocked out after three or four rounds and he would have been fine. He would have had a headache the next day he would carried on and been fine. The fact that he's so tough, he's probably too tough for his own good and took so much punishment that he ended up doing some damage to himself. Occasionally you get these freak accidents that happen but I'm pretty sure he's going to make a full recovery and hopefully everyone is going to support him through this tough time he's going to have."
