Brazilian lawmakers held a hearing on Wednesday (2nd September) to investigate the effect of water pollution on athletes at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Script: SOUNDBITE (Portuguese) Marcos Boulos, infectologist, professor at the Medical University of Sao Paulo and coordinator of the Disease and Control office of Sao Paulo state:
"If we start to think, when the congressman (who talked before him) says that he didn't see anyone swimming in the Guanabara Bay, well that's good that you haven't seen anyone swimming in it congressman. Because in the Guanabara bay, if 51 percent of the sewage were treated that means that 49 percent is not, which means that we have raw feaces in there."
SOUNDBITE (Portuguese) Ezequiel Teixeira, lawmaker representing Rio de Janeiro:
"Administrations come and go, administrations come and go, and then when I hear the doctor (Marcos Boulos) say 'we still have raw feces in there' that gives me chills."
SOUNDBITE (Portuguese) Tania Braga, head of sustainability, accessibility and legacy for the Rio 2016 organising committee:
"Nonetheless, the issue of viruses (viral testing of water for recreational use) is a developing science which is interesting and desired, and can be done in a complementary manner to have a more refined analysis, a more refined risk analysis."
SOUNDBITE: (Portuguese) Leonardo Espindola, Rio de Janeiro State government Chief of Staff:
"Perhaps we will not effectively reach the 80 percent pledge (of sewage treatment), but this goal was fundamental to stimulate, to attract investments to the city, to attract attention of the problem at the Guanabara Bay."
