"Yeah, the elation's always the same after any race. You know, the relief, satisfaction that you broke it and that it's over. [It is a] Huge relief more than anything because I was confident I could break the record but until you actually go through the process and do it... there's always that element of, not doubt, but... you know, until it's done, until the fat lady sings, as we say in England."

(Q: will anyone break your record?)

"I don't know. I mean it's... obviously that's raised the bar a fair bit to what the existing record was, and for sure it will deter people or make them think twice about it, because it's been a bit of a rush up to now for people to have a go at it. So I think... yeah, it's the first sort of real big marker now really. I couldn't have done any more today though really with the conditions, I mean it was like 1030 (atmospheric) pressure, which was probably... I keep banging on about pressure but it's probably the worst weekend to have done it (the record attempt) in the last couple of months... So that was about as far as I was going to go under those conditions today, so. Perhaps not as far as I maybe have dreamed or hoped had the conditions been different, but satisfied nonetheless, you know."

(Q: and how are you going to celebrate?)

"By standing up for a start... because I'm struggling to sit down at the moment."

    (On status in cycling).

"So, I think there's - someone might correct me - but in the modern era post (Fausto) Coppi, there's probably Coppi, (Jacques) Anquetil, (Eddy) Merckx and Miguel (Indurain) and myself, so five of us that have won the Tour (de France) and done the hour record. So that's quite a nice little thing to have, you know."
