With over four minutes on the rest of the field it was a calm and collected Alberto Contador who began Wednesday's stage 17 looking pretty in pink.

And it remained rosy until the finish line for the Spaniard, but - it was Sacha Modolo who stole the headlines at the Giro d'Italia

The stage, from Tirano to Luguno saw Marco Bandiera, Iljo Keisse and Giacomo Berlato out in front until 26km from home.

The scenery was stunning. Lake Laguna providing a dramatic backdrop.

A new threesome quickly pulled clear, led by Adam Hansen. The Australian sticking at it until 8km to go - the lure of the peloton eventually sucking him in

Temperatures were rising in Switzerland and the riders were feeling the heat.

It all ended with a sprint finish - a superb lead-out from Sacha Modolo's Lampre-Merida team saw him beat Giacomo Nizzolo by a bike length to the line.

No change to the overall standings then, where Contador leads Mikel Landa by 4mins and 2 seconds.
