The Golden Cockerel At Spurs' New Stadium Has A Bullet Dent Because Of Paul Gascoigne

One of the key features at Spurs' swanky £850 million new stadium is the Golden Cockerel that sits on the top of the new 17,500 single-tier South Stand.

The 4.5m cockerel, produced by London Mould Makers with the held of 3D, is bigger and better than the replica but it also has a huge nod to the original courtesy of bullet dents in the statue.

Why is there bullet dents in there, I hear your ask? Well, in one of many classic stories involving Paul Gascoigne, 'Gazza' shot at the cockerel using an air rifle when he was playing for the club.

It was only right that they displayed the incredible attention detail by honouring one of the most gifted and colourful players.

Club historian John Fennelly recalled the incident when speaking to the Spurs website back in 1988: "The cockerel was falling apart. It was dented and in pretty poor condition.

"The story was the dents had been caused in the Blitz. But the truth was the damage was done by Gazza - with an air rifle.
"He tried to deny it but he'd been spotted."

Spurs put on their first test event at the 62,000 capacity stadium yesterday, with 28,987 fans seeing their Under 18's side kicking off the new era with a 3-1 win over Southampton.

The next dress rehearsal comes on Sunday as a slew of Spurs legends take on Inter Forever. Jurgen Klinsmann, Robbie Keane, Rafael van der Vaart and Dimitar Berbatov are all confirmed but Gascoigne has also tweeted to suggest he will be involved.

Accompanying a 'Tottenham Hotspur: One Family' picture on Twitter, Gascoigne wrote: "Wow just had to add this as my time at Spurs was family.

"I'm sorry, just a bit too excited to be playing. I loved the club, even the car park was beautiful, down to the tea lady.

It'll be an honour to wear the number eight again. See you next week. Come on you Spurs. Huge hugs from Gazza."
