MURDER: South African football captain Senzo Meyiwa was shot and killed while at his girlfriend's house

Zanokuhle Mbatha, 25, is facing charges of murder and armed robbery following the death of Senzo Meyiwa.

Meyiwa, 27, was gunned down on Sunday at his girlfriend's house on the outskirts of Johannesburg.

The Orlando Pirates goalkeeper was reportedly shot after refusing to give his mobile phone to his alleged attacker.

Following his death South Africa's president Jacob Zuma spoke of the huge loss to the nation.

"We mourn the death of this young footballer and team leader whose life has been taken away at the prime of his career," he said.

"The law enforcement authorities must leave no stone unturned in finding his killers and bringing them to justice.

"Words cannot express the nation's shock at this loss."

Fifa president Sepp Blatter tweeted: "Thoughts with family, players & fans of @Orlando–Pirates & @BafanaBafana. A senseless, tragic loss."

Rugby union world champion Bryan Habana said: "No words can describe the tragic and untimely death of #SenzoMeyiwa.

"A true South African hero taken way to soon!! May his soul RIP."

The 27-year-old was one of South Africa's top players and had yet to concede a goal in four African Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Meyiwa's girlfriend Kelly Khumalo posted a picture of the pair just hours before the shooting.
