Victor Valdes could join Manchester United as a free agent

Manchester United made a surprise announcement earlier this afternoon that ex-Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes has been offered the opportunity to train with United’s first-team at Carrington in order to help him overcome his injury problems.

There were no Valdes links prior to United’s official statement today but it hasn’t taken long for reports from Spain to emerge after which suggest Valdes will undergo a medical with the club and sign a contract if he passes. Although, it should be noted that up until only a couple of weeks ago Mundo Deportivo believed Valdes was Liverpool bound so there are conflicting reports in that sense.

Just like the Ander Herrera and Radamel Falcao deals, there were no murmurings of a deal with Valdes at all from the British press which once again shows that Van Gaal is keeping his cards close to his chest in much the same fashion as Sir Alex Ferguson always used to do, which is far better from the club’s perspective.

As for any deal for Valdes, it’s certainly not outside the realms of possibility he could join on a free transfer because it is likely United will need a new backup goalkeeper.

Back in August, Lindegaard’s agent revealed he was looking for a new club after being told he wouldn’t get much game time at United under Van Gaal: “In 2010 he switched Aalesund out with Manchester United and after a fierce battle with De Gea, the Lindegaard realises that he will not get much game time at Old Trafford next season,” he said.

“Therefore, Manchester United has now given him permission to look for a new club.”

As it happened, Lindegaard didn’t leave but that mindset is unlikely to have changed between then and now, so Valdes could walk straight in as Lindegaard’s replacement.

Valdes would be a great backup goalkeeper for United to have and there’s no question he would help De Gea progress even more, so United could do worse than sign Valdes on a free if he were to pass a medical.
