Sterling gets England call

Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling has been called into the England squad for Tuesday's decisive World Cup qualifier with Poland at Wembley.

Manager Roy Hodgson lost two members of his squad on Friday, in the shape of Tom Cleverley and Kyle Walker.

Cleverley returned to Manchester United before the 4-1 win over Montenegro with a calf injury that is likely to keep him out for up to three weeks, while Walker picked up a booking in the match which means he is suspended for the clash with Poland.

Either Phil Jones or Chris Smalling are likely to replace the Tottenham man at right-back, but Hodgson has called on Sterling, who was part of Gareth Southgate's Under-21 squad that beat San Marino on Thursday, to bolster numbers ahead of a game England must win to guarantee qualification for next summer's Finals in Brazil.

Sterling became the fifth-youngest player in England history when he made his debut in the friendly defeat to Sweden last November, but the 18-year-old has not featured since.

England head into the final set of fixtures with a one-point lead at the top of Group H.

But with Ukraine's final game being a trip to San Marino, who have lost every game in qualifying, Hodgson knows his side must win to avoid November's playoffs.
