Wright shows faith in Watt after tough day

St Johnstone manager Tommy Wright admitted it was not striker Tony Watt’s day despite his side’s 2-0 Ladbrokes Premiership win over St Mirren.
David Wotherspoon and Matty Kennedy scored the goals in a dominant display but Watt missed several good chances – including a penalty saved by Craig Samson – as his two-month goal drought continued.
Even another spot-kick missed by Liam Craig did not prove costly in a dominant home performance – but the talk afterwards surrounded former Celtic striker Watt.
“It wasn’t Tony’s day and he has just said he won’t be watching the match on TV,” said Wright.
“He will have better days. He is a striker and he will miss chances.
“We put him on penalties but the way his day was going I was tempted to shout on and get Liam to take it – but I don’t know if that would have made any difference.
“He will get a goal. He was probably celebrating off his header in the first half. It was an incredible save from Samson.
“Tony does everything right there, and you can miss a penalty.
“He also has a good chance that he should probably take a touch (with) but he tries to take it early. But he is playing well for us and the goals will come.”
It was another setback for Buddies manager Oran Kearney, who is still looking for his first win in Scottish football.
His side failed to take inspiration from surviving the two spot-kick scares and the Irishman felt referee Andrew Dallas made the wrong call by booking attacker Danny Mullen when he was clipped by Perth midfielder Murray Davidson in the first period.
“By all accounts the penalty in the first half was absolutely nailed on,” he said.
“Some of the St Johnstone players came in at half-time laughing – not in jest, but disbelief – that it wasn’t given.
“The body language of the St Johnstone players who were around there at the time told me it was a penalty.
“But those are the kind of things that go against you when you are down there where we are.
“When you are in our position those incidents take on so much more importance. You look at moments in the game that can change the momentum.
“But the lack of reaction in the final 15 minutes was disappointing.”
