Darren Way happy to fork out for Yeovil’s last-gasp winner

Tom James’ last-gasp free-kick winner may have hit Yeovil boss Darren Way in the pocket, but the manager had no complaints after his team ended their long Brunton Park jinx with a 1-0 win over Carlisle.

James fired the free-kick through a crowd of players and past Carlisle goalkeeper Adam Collin with five minutes of stoppage time already completed.

The game had looked to be heading for a goalless stalemate against a Cumbrians side that has forgotten how to win and score in front of their own supporters.

However, Way was delighted with the performance of his young troops and said: “It was very brave to come to Carlisle and play the way they did.

“We would have qualified to play in the Under-23 league when you consider how young a side we are. The thing is to improve every day and we are obsessive in what we want to achieve.”

Way puts a contribution into the pot for his men every time they score from a set play.

He admitted: “We over-achieved in the result we got today. It’s another one chalked off. We keep changing history and I’m delighted with a clean sheet as well.”

Yeovil had promised 50 of their travelling fans a pie and pint to reward their 650-mile round trip, and he added: “We appreciate them and the way they have stuck behind the young players.

“I imagine there’s a few loose cannons but that is the way to show their support for the football club. It’s a great way to give them something.

“We kept calm under pressure and used the width of the pitch and all the players kept passing and passing and passing. We don’t have a lot of experience, but the players kept going, which is what pleased me.”

Carlisle plummeted to a fifth straight home defeat without scoring, but assistant manager Tommy Wright said: “Overall I think it was tough on us, but we can’t go feeling sorry for ourselves.

“There is a lack of desire and hunger and maybe score a scrappy or wonderful goal. Is it confidence? I don’t know.”

“You can practice all you want, but at the end of the day there’s a difference between training and playing and you have to have mental strength to put the ball in the back of the net.”
