That creates the intriguing possibility of the Swedish superstar being offered a short-term contract by United.
Ibrahimovic, 35, was released by the Old Trafford club at the end of the season, when they decided not to take up an option to extend his contract.
That was because of the knee injury which seemingly brought a premature end to his career in Manchester - and was expected to keep him out until the New Year at least.
But Ibra was at one of United's training grounds last Tuesday - Littleton Road in Salford - with his sons Maximillian and Vincent, who were training there.
And he told staff there he hopes to be fit in five months.
United's 28-goal top scorer from last season has already been given permission by the club to do his rehabilitation at their main training complex at Carrington.
Manchester United star Zlatan Ibrahimovic is poised to make a sensational return
Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney, meanwhile, was assessed by United at last weekend's Scotland v England World Cup clash at Hampden Park.
Tierney, 20, was watched by three United scouts in the 2-2 draw.
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho would like to add a left-back to his squad and Tierney is regarded as one of the best young players in Britain in that position.
He is valued at £15m, but Celtic would prefer to keep him.
