The struggling champions have made up their mind that the former assistant manager is the man to lead their relegation fight and Champions League bid, following the sacking of Claudio Ranieri.

A decent showing against Hull on Saturday is set to see the 53-year-old confirmed on a full-time appointment, after he inspired the Foxes to a 3-1 victory over Liverpool on Monday.

Former England boss Roy Hodgson and ex-Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink have been linked along with Huddersfield's David Wagner.

And it is understood Leicester want to appoint Shakespeare during the 10-day break after the visit of struggling Hull before the Champions League second leg against Sevilla.

Shakespeare is popular with the players at the club who so clearly lost faith with Ranieri. And by appointing him as full-time manager the club know he will have more authority for the rest of the season.

The support for Shakespeare shone through in Leicester's demolition of Liverpool and won't have gone unnoticed by billionaire owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha who was watching on from the stands.

Bookies slashed Hodgson's odds after it became clear he might be interested in the job.

But Hodgson's age - he is 70 in August - and England's disastrous showing at Euro 2016 may see Leicester's owners struggle to convince Foxes' fans he is the man for the job.

A Leicester source insisted last night: "They've met Hodgson, but Shaky will get the job."
