Lawyers are launching a fresh appeal against his child sex conviction tomorrow.

The caged Sunderland player’s legal team will fight his conviction and six-year sentence for grooming and engaging in sexual activity with a schoolgirl fan.

After the date was set for the ex-England footballer’s second appeal, his sister Faye Johnson tweeted: “I hope that justice can finally be done for my brother.”

The start of the hearing has sparked a call from the NSPCC for the government to amend the law on grooming children.

A spokesman for the charity said dad-of-one Johnson was convicted of meeting a 15-year-old girl after grooming her, but that the grooming itself was not a crime.
