Chapecoense tragedy
Manchester United CEO Ed Woodward sent Chapecoense a letter one day after the tragedy that wiped out their squad. The Daily Mail reports that he sent out the letter on behalf of the club expressing its deepest sympathies on November 29.
The tragedy occurred a day earlier. Nineteen first team members of the Chapecoense first team died in a plane crash along with dozens of other people. On their way to Medellin to play the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana final, their plane ran out of fuel and hit the crest of a mountain. United can obviously relate. In February 1958, eight of their players died in the Munich air disaster, including Duncan Edwards.
New friendship
The Mail doesn't have the exact wording of the letter but knows the tone and key points of the message. It expressed sympathy and spoke about the key role the sporting community has with the rebuilding process.
The news outlet believes that this correspondence opens the door on United coming to the aid of Chapecoense. While gaining work permits would be difficult, the Red Devils could lend their Brazilian counterparts a few players.
