There are a few avenues to spend your vote each time a major election comes around; on the major parties or maybe even a less likely candidate - an act often accused of throwing your vote away.
However, one American took this to new levels on Tuesday night by pledging their ballot to Barcelona striker Lionel Messi.
The image, technically illegal as it is not allowed to broadcast images of your vote, has since gone viral on social media.
