CHANGE: Footie fans spotted one big mistake on the new Alan Shearer statue unveiled today
Many fans have taken to Twitter after the club legend’s famous open-palm salute was changed to a one-finger point on the statue.
The five-metre bronze sculpture costing £250,000 was first commissioned in 2007 – but has only been unveiled today.
Magpie Ranger tweeted: “Google ‘Shearer Goal Celebration’ click on “images” and then base your Shearer statue on that mate. You had one job.”
Fan Rob Arnott wrote: “Is it me or did Newcastle manage to get the celebration wrong on Alan Shearer’s statue?”

And Henry said: “Shame that the Alan Shearer statue looks nothing like Alan Shearer really isn’t it.”
The project was put together by former club chairman Freddy Shepherd and his family.
In a club statement, Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez said: “Unfortunately I am not able to be there at today’s ceremony because of our training schedule but I know it will be a very special occasion for Alan, for the fans, the club and everyone in the city.

"Alan was an incredible player, the perfect number nine, and he had a fantastic career representing this great club.
"The statue of him at St James’ Park is a perfect tribute to a true club legend and I send Alan my very best wishes for a memorable day."
