Atletico Madrid have officially made the strangest signing of the transfer window

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone definitely has a type when it comes to signing players.

They need to be hard working, abrasive and not afraid of the dark arts in order to please the Reservoir Dogs look-a-like.

But we've got to admit we were a little taken aback with Atletico's latest signing.

You may know him as Jason Bourne but to us he will always be Matt Damon. We're not sure why he was posing with Alexey Smertin.

Simeone hasn't lost his marbles though, there is a reason behind Damon parading as an Atletico player. Damon is in Madrid to promote the release of the latest Jason Bourne film.

Atletico have a fond history of combining football and movies due to their partnership with Universal Studios, while Atleti president Enrique Cerezo is also a film producer.

The club have been sponsored by Spiderman, Hellboy and Resident Evil 2 down the years due to a deal with film distributor Columbia.

And Damon had clearly done his research, avoiding any David Cameron slip ups when he said: "Yes, I know Atletico are fantastic. They remind me of my favourite team, the Boston Red Sox."

Maybe that's why Diego Costa was so angry last season. He was just promoting the latest Hulk film.
