Liverpool have been charged following fans' chanting at Old Trafford

Uefa have so far failed to flag up songs referencing the tragedies both clubs have endured.

Delegate Jean Paul Mievis, from Belgium, prepared the report for Uefa after attending the second leg of the last 16 tie at Old Trafford when the chant was audible. Along with illicit chants Liverpool were charged with setting off fireworks, the throwing of objects, crowd disturbances and the late kick off of the second half.

United were charged with blocking stairways, crowd disturbances and the throwing of objects. They have not been charged with illicit chanting.

References to the Munich air disaster, Heysel and Hillsborough were heard during the games.

Both clubs are in the process of giving their observations to Uefa who, in addition to the initial charges, are now investigating other incidents.

The case will raise questions over what constitutes illicit chanting and follows on from Uefa's decision to charge Manchester City after their supporters booed the Champions League anthem before the win over Sevilla last October.

Uefa later dropped the case.

The matters will be dealt with by Uefa's control, ethics and disciplinary body on May 19, the day after the Europa League Final in Basel.
