Violent clashes flare up in Bilbao city centre

All hell broke loose outside Athletic Bilbao's San Mames stadium prior to the Basque side's Europa League clash with Olympique Marseille, with hooligans from both clubs taking part in what seemed like a repeat performance of the scenes witnessed during the first leg in France.
Violent fans threw flares, fire-crackers, street furnishings and even knives as the heated atmosphere grew more and more intense. In fact, calm wasn't even restored after the kick-off, although fans respected the minute's silence prior to the match, before continuing to light flares inside the stadium.
The local police, known as the 'Ertzaintza', detained five individuals in connection with the disturbances prior to the match. However, it can only be confirmed that one French fan was arrested. In addition, a 28-year-old had to be taken to a nearby hospital for treatment following a neck injury caused by a broken bottle, and a few police officers had to receive medical attention.
Apparently, the fans involved in the clashes had arranged to meet in order to carry on the violence witnessed in Marseille.
