Author of term 'Metrosexual' labels Cristiano Ronaldo a 'Spornosexual'

'Metrosexual' is a term you don't tend to hear as much these days, and that's because the concept is going out of fashion, according to Mark Simpson, the essayist who coined the term back in 1994.

Metrosexuality was and is about men maintaining their appearance in the obsessive way hitherto considered effeminate: grooming, neat fashion, weight-lifting.

Now there's a new wave of men coming, fusing sport and porn, according to Simpson.

Ronaldo has always been seen as the classic metrosexual: grooming and taking care of his appearance with meticulous care, and always sporting the latest fashion trend.

Speaking in an interview with Catalan paper La Vanguardia today, Simpson labels Cristiano Ronaldo as a classic 'Spornosexual', at the forefront of the new frontier of men.

It's certainly an eye-catching term, and one to attach to shirtless-selfie taking athletes like Ronaldo – but the somewhat ham-fisted sound of the term means it probably won't catch on like 'metrosexual' did.
