Sunderland suspend Adam Johnson after arrest on suspicion of sex with under-age girl

FOOTBALL faces a new sex scandal this morning after England winger Adam Johnson was arrested on suspicion of having sex with a 15-year-old girl.

Adam Johnson has been released on bail

His club, Sunderland, withdrew Johnson from the squad set to take on Hull in their Premier League relegation battle tonight after news broke of the 27-year-old’s arrest by Durham police. He was released on bail last night.

He has been suspended pending the outcome of the police investigation.

Johnson was born and brought up in County Durham. He made his England debut in May 2010 having just moved from Middlesbrough to Manchester City and has since played 12 games for his country, scoring two goals.

His last international appearance was in a 2-1 friendly defeat by Italy in August 2012, shortly before he returned to the North-east in a £10million deal.
