SHOTS FIRED: Hodgson has a bite at Rodgers over Sterling handling

The England boss stoked up his war of words with his Anfield counterpart by insisting there is no medical evidence to back up giving players two-day recovery periods after matches, something Rodgers is a firm believer in.

Hodgson's latest blast comes after young Liverpool star Raheem Sterling was left out of the Three Lions team that started against Estonia on Sunday night after he complained about feeling tired.

Hodgson even claimed the 19-year-old might have the need to rest "ingrained in him" due to the methods employed by Rodgers.

"I don't think there is a lot of medical evidence to support the 'two day recovery'," the England boss said.

"If you want to, you might want to research that one. Certainly, the Germans, who everyone admires so much, they don't do it. That is for certain.

"Raheem might say it (the two-day recovery period) is something that is becoming ingrained in him and that he felt the need to talk about being tired more than he would normally do."

Sterling has come under fire from some fans for apparently asking Hodsgon to give him a rest against Estonia, with many sending him angry messages on Twitter.

But he responded by saying: "Excuse me for being human."

Hodgson has already had a bust-up with Rodgers this season over Daniel Sturridge after he picked up a thigh injury training with the international squad two days after a match.

Rodgers had said the striker should have instead been enjoying a recovery day after the friendly against Norway last month.

Hodgson has revealed he will have talks with Rodgers about how to handle Sterling, who eventually came on a sub in the 1-0 win in Estonia which helped the Three Lions take their record in Euro 2016 qualifying to three wins out of three.

"Brendan has been talking anyway about the pressures Raheem has been under and the fatigue that may have set in a little bit," the England boss added.

"So I am pretty sure that he will be dealing over the next month with Raheem as he sees fair."
