STERLING EFFORT: Raheem Sterling has continued to impress Brendan Rodgers

There have been widespread reports that the rising Liverpool star will be offered a stunning new contract, sending his wages soaring to the £100,000-a-week mark.

But in a clear "Don't spoil the kids" message Kop boss Rodgers will hold new deal talks in the future, but there is no rush to get round the negotiating table.

Liverpool rewarded Sterling, 19, with a fresh deal 18 months ago and Rodgers wants his talented teenager to keep the hunger for football, not mega wages and the trappings of early success.

Rodgers said: "It will be something that's done but we need to be careful. We're happy with the way we reward young players."

"Raheem is a kid who has propelled himself onto another level again."

"He got rewarded for that and that will always be the case with all our players."

"They won’t have to get to a certain period of time in their contract before we pull them in. But we just have to be careful."

"When you give players too much, too early that will be their downfall."

"It's a big problem with British players that they lose their hunger."

"They buy a new Range Rover Sport before they have a driving licence."

"Young players get carried away and then wonder why their careers fall away."

"They get rewarded too early – that’s why we keep an eye on them here."
