Manchester United will make one last bid to prise World Cup-winner Mats Hummels from Borussia Dortmund.

And if that deal fails, United will make a £17million move for Ajax's Daley Blind.

Hummels, Germany's commanding centre-back, has been the top defensive target for new boss Louis van Gaal since the day he was appointed.

But Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp insists Hummels, 25, is staying in the Bundesliga.

That means United will have to test that resolve with an offer of £30m.

The Red Devils are back on the case with Hummels because their second choice centre-back, Thomas Vermaelen, yesterday joined Barcelona for £15m.

Van Gaal was not interested in a proposed swap deal involving United's England defender Chris Smalling.

Blind, meanwhile, was part of Van Gaal's Dutch team which finished third at the Brazil World Cup.

He is 24 and can operate as a left-sided centre-back or at left-back, either in an orthodox role or as a wing-back.

Another possibility for United in their centre-back search is Roma's Mehdi Benatia.

The Moroccan defender, 27, was Manchester City's back-up target to Porto's Eliaquim Mangala.

United, meanwhile, are still being linked with an ambitious attempt to sign Real Madrid's Argentina winger Angel Di Maria.

But that is being touted as a £50m deal and mega-wealthy French club PSG dropped out of the running because they said the whole package was too expensive.
