Hodgson made his last substitution when Ryan Bertrand replaced Leighton Baines and the Chelsea defender, 23, instantly came to England’s rescue.
After Ruddy had made another good save to tip over from Marco Verratti, Bertrand headed off the line from the corner.
England then broke away and Milner picked out Defoe.
The little striker cut inside and fired in a shot which flew into the top corner via Sirigu’s fingertips.
