HEAD BOY ... Michael Carrick congratulates goalscorer Jagielka
England employed a flexible 4-5-1 formation compared to the more rigid 4-4-2 at the Euros, with Cleverley pushing on to back up Carroll in attack.
Yet they were behind on 15 minutes, after Butland had pushed away Alessandro Diamanti’s drive.
From the resulting Diamanti corner, the Italians’ experienced captain Daniele De Rossi met the ball with a deft header and it flew beyond Butland into the roof of the net.
England were back on level terms in the 27th minute, as a Lampard corner dipped in low and Phil Jagielka bravely threw himself among the flailing boots to score with a diving header which crept just inside the right post of Italy keeper Salvatore Sirigu.
The confidence grew, there was plenty of good running off the ball and Johnson was causing some trouble down the right flank.
Cleverley set up Lampard and the veteran midfielder’s 25-yard effort was well saved by Sirigu.
