Russian diver Artem Silchenko won his first Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series event since 2014 on Sunday (28th August) in Polignano a Mare, Italy. Canada's Lysanne Richard won the women's event.
The battle for supremacy in the 2016 Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series got a lot more interesting after the season's fifth stop at Polignano a Mare in Italy on Sunday (28th August)
Australia's Rhiannan Iffland had won the last two stops and appeared to be running away with the title, but in Italy she had to watch as Canada's Lysanne Richard stole the laurels.
Richard, a mother of three, grabbed her first ever victory with three superb dives from the 21.5 metre platform.
She finished ahead of Iffland in second, and the USA's Rachelle Simpson in third.
With four stops left in the season Iffland (560 pts) has a 110 point lead over Richard (450 pts).
In the men's event the five-time Cliff Diving World Champion, Britain's Gary Hunt had won the previous three stops, but he failed to qualify for the final round for only the third time in his career.
The eventual winner on the 27 metre platform was Russia's Artem Silchenko who celebrated his first win since 2014.
The 32-year-old was the 2013 World Champion but this victory was unexpected because it came after a month of no diving.
The United States' Steven LoBue and Mexico's Jonathan Paredes finished second and third respectively.
Paredes (660 pts) is now just 80 points behind Hunt (740 pts).
