Michael Phelps talked to SNTV on Tuesday 16th August about his Olympic haul of 28 medals, and also about his future in swimming.
SOUNDBITE: (English) Michael Phelps (on hating water as a child)
"It's wild to kind of think about how far we've come from, you know, mom putting me into water safety, I hated the water, I didn't want anything to do with it. I learnt on my back and now I'm to the point where I've done everything I've ever wanted and I've 28 Olympic medals - it just sounds so weird, so strange."
SOUNDBITE: (English) Michael Phelps (on all of his medals)
"When I get home that's something I want to do, I want to take them all out and I want to look at them all together - a lifetime of Olympic performances where we had a good record, you know, what 28 for 30, it's a good record."
SOUNDBITE: (English) Michael Phelps (on getting into coaching)
"Yes and that's something that I'm looking forward to but it's also going to be a big challenge for me. I'm going to have to learn how to be patient, I'm going to have to learn some of those small things that Bob (Bowman, coach) has done so well dealing with me over the last 20 years that will help me coach because I do have such a passion for the sport, I have a lot of knowledge about the sport so being able to help a college kid be able to accomplish their goals and their dreams would be amazing. If I was a little tiny small piece of that puzzle, it feels pretty good to pass things along."
SOUNDBITE: (English) Michael Phelps (on enjoying the Rio Games)
"This was probably the most laid back games that I've ever had. I was ready, I was excited. I knew that I was physically in shape and I just had to fine tune some mental things."
SOUNDBITE: (English) Michael Phelps (on swimming)
"There are a lot of things that bother me about the sport and how they're handled. We are the athletes. We are the people who are making the sport what it is so it would be nice to change some things around for the athletes to have a little bit more say, a little bit more power and change some of the rules maybe."
