Rowers Maiike Head and Ilse Paulis celebrated their gold medal in the lightweight double sculls at Holland House on Friday (12th August).
SOUNDBITE (English) Ilse Paulis, lightweight double sculls rower:(On celebrating the gold medal at Holland House)
"It's not something I'm used to, winning today is great for ourselves, and to be able to share this with the rest of Holland and everybody here, that's even greater."
SOUNDBITE (English) Maaike Head, lightweight double sculls rower:
"During the race I felt really in control, and I really felt like 'OK, we can win a medal'. After a while I really thought, 'OK it's going to be gold', but then a couple of hours ago we saw the race on television and I thought 'OK, it's really close', it felt so much more in control and at the finish it was only like one second. It was really like 'blip, blip' at the finish, and it felt like a larger distance."
SOUNDBITE (English) Ilse Paulis, lightweight double sculls rower:(On whether she was expecting such a successful 2016)
"No, not at all. In 2015 we didn't perform so well, and we didn't get a good start. But I think we knew we had some speed in our boat, we just had to make it work. We had a good plan and executed it. But that we could go throughout the season without being beaten, I would say it was pretty unexpected."
SOUNDBITE (English) Maaike Head, lightweight double sculls rower:
"I think right now we're just going to enjoy everything, and when we get back home we're going to go on holiday. And after that I have to go and work for a while, and you have to go and finish your studies as well. So I think at least for a couple of months we will have our priorities somewhere else, and I think it is healthy to just get your mind off things. There is more to life than only rowing. But you never know what life is going to bring,"
