Spain wins second gold medal in Rio 2016 through Maialen Chourraut in women's canoe slalom (11th August 2016)
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish), Maialen Chourraut, 2016 Gold medallist in the women's Canoe Slalom, Kayak (K1), on her reaction to claiming the gold medal:
"This is the best victory of my whole life. I could never imagine there to be so much joy just for winning a medal. When I reached the finish line, I could only scream of so much joy within me. I still have that rattling sensation right now. I don't know about the future and what lies ahead, but I'm taking this one day at a time. Another cycle of building up to the next Olympics begins and there's numerous competitions ahead in the next couple of years, so there's a lot of planning to do. For now, I just want to really soak into this moment and cherish this feeling that I've worked so hard for. There's not much more to improve and this medal has made me truly satisfied, unlike the bronze medal I got in London."
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish), coach Xabi Etxaniz on the significance of this medal:
"Canoeing is still such a minority sport in Spain and in terms of numbers, and we don't have huge numbers involved in the sport at the moment. What's clear right now is that Maialen's success here, having come from zero, taking thing step by step, undergoing two major shoulder injuries, and against all the odds, also not forgetting we built this sport since the 1992 Games that was held in Barcelona, Maialen could never have imagined to be at an Olympics. Her journey has created hope and given so much inspiration and motivation, especially to women, and also our men, not forgetting mothers, that sports and motherhood can strike a wonderful complement for each other."
