Syrian swimmer Yusra Mardini, competing under the Olympic flag at the Rio Games, secured a win in her preliminary heat in the 100-metre butterfly on Saturday (8th August).
There were great scenes at the pool in Rio on Saturday as refugee team swimmer Yusra Mardini won her preliminary heat in the 100-metre butterfly.
The 18-year old's winning time of 1 minute 9.21 seconds wasn’t enough to advance to the semi-finals, however, the result has been warmly received around the world.
Mardini's story has been widely reported, as her and her sister were forced to swim for three hours in order to stop a boat full of 20 refugees capsizing.
The Syrian eventually reached Berlin where she has been training for the games.
Mardini will hope for similar success when she competes in the women's 100 metres freestyle heats on Wednesday (10th August).
