Post-game reaction from the Kansas City Royals and New York Mets after the Royals won Game 1 of the World Series 5-4 in 14 innings on Tuesday (27 October) night. Edinson Volquez's father passed away before the game, but at the request of the family they kept the news from him until after the game.

"I don't have any idea when he found out, we found out about it before the game and and the wishes of the family was let Eddie pitch, so I was kind of keeping my eye I didn't want him to hear about it, I was keeping my eye on him and and he was fine he didn't know and I guess after the game was when he found out."

SOUNDBITE (English) Ned Yost, Royals manager:

"It was a great night two things you don't want in game one of the World Series and one of them is to go 14 innings and the other is to lose. So to find a way to grind that game out against a great team over there they were matched both teams were matching pitch for pitch we had opportunities they made big pitches and get out of innings but to grind through that game and win it in the 14th inning was big."

SOUNDBITE (English) Alex Gordon, Royals left-fielder (talking about the home run he hit off Mets closer Jeurys Famila to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth inning)

"I never saw him before I knew he was really good definitely wasn't trying to do that against him great sinker so I wanted to be ready for it and the at bat before with Salvy (Salvatore Perez). I saw him quick-pitch so I wasn't expecting that and I wanted to make sure when I got in the box I was ready to hit and he tried to quick pitch me and just left the ball right there to hit and with a guy like that you can't miss pitches that he gives you to hit and that's what happened."
