Gabriel Medina crowned world champion as Julian Wilson wins Triple Crown in Hawaii.
Script:Their footballers may of failed at the world title tilt, however Brazil have a new sporting world champion to be proud of.
Gabriel Medina was runner-up to Australian Julian Wilson here in Hawaii, yet that was enough to secure the World Championship & his country's first ever World Surfing title.
Medina was assured the title without even taking to the water. As 3-time Champion Mick Fanning was defeated by Medina's fellow Brazilian Alejo Muniz in Round 5.
Medina, 20, had already reached the last eight and the throng of Brazilian fans erupted with joy when Muniz won.
Medina began 2014 with a win in the first event on the Gold Coast.
He is the first 20-year-old to win the world crown since Kelly Slater won his first of 11 titles in 1992.
In the final, Wilson posted a 9.93 before Medina responded with a perfect 10.
Yet, the World Champion was clearly unconcerned he'd finished in second place.
"It feels amazing. I don't know what to say right now. I have a great support here just helping me now and I just love the crowd, love this sport and everything pays off right now."
